The table below sets forth carloading information for the first quarter of 2009 through February and the first quarter of 2008 through February:
GWI railroads acquired within the last 12 months shipped a combined 27,442 carloads in the first quarter of 2009 through February. Same-railroad traffic in the first quarter of 2009 through February decreased by 9,960 carloads, or 7.9 percent, compared with the first quarter of 2008 through February. The decrease was principally due to declines of 4,582 carloads of pulp & paper traffic and 4,232 carloads of metals traffic. These decreases were partially offset by a 3,377 carload increase in farm & food products traffic and a 2,110 carload increase in coal, coke & ores traffic. All other same-railroad traffic decreased by a net 6,633 carloads.
Historically, GWI has found that carload information may be indicative of freight revenues on its railroads, but may not be indicative of total revenues, operating expenses, operating income or net income.
