Coffee Review conducts blind cuppings and ranks coffees on a 100-point scale. The coffees are judged based on five different criteria, and Bird Rock’s Sumatra Ulos Batak scored a 10 for both aroma and flavor, nine for body and aftertaste, and eight for acidity.
Two other Bird Rock varieties, the Panama Elida Estate Natural Catuai and the Ethiopia Washed Yirga Cheffe also received outstanding scores of 95 and 94, respectfully, and were both sourced through direct trade with the individual farmers.

According to Coffee Review, the Sumatra Ulos Batak was given the following assessment: “Extraordinarily intense and complexly aromatic coffee. Pungent fruit (grapefruit, black currant); moist pipe tobacco and sweet, freshly turned clay; molasses and chocolate fudge. Round, quietly vibrant acidity; full, syrupy mouthfeel. Richly sweet, powerfully flavor-saturated finish.”
