Lexington, KY (PRWEB) August 02, 2014
Brad Rose, Lakewood Park’s property manager, announced that Lakewood Park is currently preparing garden plots for use by its tenants. “We’re really excited about being able to offer this opportunity to our folks,” Rose said. “When you live in an apartment, no matter how nice it is, just being able to get out and dig in the dirt a little bit makes the place feel more like home.”
Each plot will measure 10 by 10 feet, Rose said. Lakewood Park is providing garden soil in each plot, and there will be nearby access to water. Tenants who choose to “farm” will be responsible for procuring and planting their own plants, for fertilizing as needed, for weeding, trimming, and picking from their own plants, and for clearing the plot when the crop is finished.
There are currently no restrictions on what can be planted, according to Rose, except that the plant must be legal and must be of the non-invasive variety. “They can plant vegetables if they choose, and whether they decide to eat all of what their plot produces or share and trade with their neighbors is up to them. Or if they’d rather just put in flowering annuals, that works too,” Rose said.
“We’ll be posting and sending out information on signing up for the plots as we get closer to having them ready,” Rose explained. He added that there will be 25 plots available, and that residents will be able to sign up through the office once all details have been finalized.
Once completed, the community garden at Lakewood Park will be one of just two in place at apartment complexes in Lexington for use by tenants. “We’ve had this in mind for our tenants for some time now, and we’re just glad it’s nearly ready. We expect it will be a positive experience for everyone who decides to get involved. Having fresh vegetables, and you know where they came from, working outdoors, getting to know your neighbors when you’re working together, it should all be good,” Rose said with a smile.
