Former Accountant Purchases Cold Stone Creamery(r) and Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory(r)

Guy Della Lucia always knew that business ownership was his ticket to controlling his future. During his 30-year career as an accountant, he got his first taste of business ownership as the partial owner of a company and as a freelance consultant. Now, he’s taking the delicious leap into full-time entrepreneurship as the owner of a Cold Stone Creamery and Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory restaurant.

Della Lucia knew that finding the right business to purchase was imperative. That’s why he did his due diligence and discovered that Cold Stone’s and Rocky Mountain Chocolate’s sweet treats were as appealing as the businesses themselves. The two stores complemented each other perfectly – Cold Stone with its custom ice cream Creations(TM), cakes, shakes and smoothies, and Rocky Mountain Chocolate with its famous caramel apples and melt-in-your-mouth candies, truffles, caramels and creams. Not only were the two-businesses-in-one well run previously, but they were already firmly established as the local cure for any sweet tooth.

While exploring business opportunities, Della Lucia heard about the services of small business financing firm Guidant Financial. Following Guidant’s signature 401(k) rollover process, Della Lucia was able to use his retirement funds to invest in his new venture without triggering a taxable distribution.

“From start to finish, the process [with Guidant] was great,” Della Lucia explained. “The people I worked with were very professional and easy to work with. They guided me through the process and provided excellent tools to make the process as smooth as possible.”

As a business owner, Della Lucia enjoys the opportunity to get to know himself better. “This [venture] made me really look at myself and decide quickly what kind of owner/manager I was going to be,” he said. “I look forward to continuing to learn and grow personally.”

While business ownership keeps him busy, Della Lucia still makes time for cycling, playing racquetball, an occasional round of golf and weightlifting. He also enjoys hiking on nearby Farmington trails, fishing in the Uinta Mountains and giving back to the community by participating in service projects.
